Dubbed as the “biggest fashion event of the year,” the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale kicked off this week and runs through August 4.

But like all major sale events: it’s not worth your money.

Don’t just take our word for it. This TikTok from @agingunfiltered sums up the general consumer sentiment perfectly:

So, what’s going on?

Like most major retail sales, heavily marketed FOMO (i.e. “It's a sale like no other, a limited-time opportunity to save big on brand-new arrivals—plus all the essentials.”), encourages shoppers to make impulse buys to snag the best deals and avoid missing out on limited-time offers.

This FOMO is then compounded by that fact that brands let influencers shop the sales early or, in some cases, gift them items to promote that no longer exist by the time the sale opens to the public.

Worst yet, the “sale” price you’re seeing isn’t really a bargain at all: according to an analysis by Consumers’ Checkbook, “Some retailers suggest their prices represent steep discounts, marking items as being on sale for 50 percent or more off regular prices. This can make customers think the ‘sale’ offers them a fantastic deal. The opposite is usually the case: We discovered that most items can be purchased for lower prices elsewhere.”

So, what can you do? Instead of giving in to or feeling pressured to take advantage of the marketing ploys of these limited-time offers, use Beni to save an average of 55% with resale deals year-round.
